Which school to choose?

Public or private school? Classic or “different” pedagogy? You are wondering which choice is best suited to your child’s needs.

public school

It has the obligation to welcome all pupils from the age of 3 years. It follows the program and the official instructions of the National Education . The teachers (school teachers) obtained the CRPE recruitment competition. Their employer is the State which remunerates them (just like doctors and school nurses). But it is the town hall that finances the operation of the school (maintenance, furniture, heating, service personnel, etc.).

In the countryside, the schools of several sparsely populated municipalities are sometimes grouped together either on a single site (one school for several municipalities), or on several (one or two levels of classes per school). In urban neighborhoods experiencing social and economic difficulties, REP (Priority Education Network) schools benefit from support measures : additional financial resources, more teachers in order to reduce the number of pupils, etc.

Private schools

In private education, a distinction is made between “under contract” and “outside contract” schools . The former – by far the most numerous – have signed a contract with the State, which partially finances them (in particular by remunerating their teachers) and controls the programs taught . The second are totally independent (programs, timetables, etc.) and financed by tuition fees paid by the parents. In both cases, the teachers come from private training centres. Private schools often offer religious education to their students, but this is not systematic.

Pedagogical approaches

Whether in the public or private sector, some schools or some teachers are developing so-called “different” pedagogies, based on an approach of the student as an actor in his or her learning. The best known are the Freinet and Montessori pedagogies . Their methods and their mode of organization are more or less distant from the practices of so-called “classical” schools. You must check with each school.

Choose the “right” school!

The “good” school is first of all the one where your child will flourish and to which you will entrust him with complete confidence!

In the public sector , your child is assigned to a school depending on where you live. This is the principle of sectorization (or school map ). If you want him to be educated in another public establishment, you must apply for an exemption from your town hall. This one will study your file and will be able to answer it positively according to the places available and the criterion which motivates your request (reasons of health, difficult access to the school, problem of childcare…).

The transition from a private school under contract to the public sector does not pose any difficulty. On the other hand, if your child comes from a non-contract private school, he will have to pass an exam to enter a public school.
